TimeGlider is a free web-based timeline application. Used by thousands of teachers and students it represents an entirely new, yet completely intuitive, way of visualizing information. An axis of time runs across the screen, around which you create or import events. A collection of events becomes a timeline. Students can work individually or in groups, either way they find TimeGlider a compelling and easy to grasp experience.

For the first time you can actually embed a timeline into a blog which is great which I have done below. It is not visually amazing but ceratinly does the job.

I have been looking around for a dynamic timeline generator for quite some time now and today I came across 3 contenders. xtimeline.com, dandelife and Ourstory.com. All 3 had their pro's and con's but I have decided to write the praises of ourstory.com for a number of reasons.
First off it's free. Secondly It is visually appealing in the manner that you can add images directly onto the timeline and add expandable check boxes to really enhance the detail without ruining the look. Third it is embeddable into your webspace and easy to share with your intended audience.
You will have to sign up to use ourstory.com which is always a pain in the classroom but it is for me a clear winner in the free online timeline generator. go to ourstory.com to see it for yourself and check out the video below.
What is it? Beedocs 3D Timeline Generator takes the boring old linear timeline format and gives it a Mac Keynote Style twist by allowing you and your students to create 3D time lines you can navigate along and zoom in and out to see both the explicit detail and overall at your own leisure. This is clearly the best looking timeline tool I have seen and as a bit of history buff I can really see its potential. It is really quite simple to use as you can see from the very unusual forest set instructional video below. Bee docs 3D timeline contains loads of pre designed templates you can hit the ground running with or customise until you heart is content. The good news is that that you can integrate them into your keynote but they do not have an instant embed to web feature which would have made this a clean winner for me. You can download it for a free trial here but it will set you back $65 for the full version which is reasonable for this product but their educational licensing needs to come down dramatically to get this into mainstream education and it would be great to see it on Windows too one day. All in all a pretty cool product that might be of real value for a history teacher but a bit to one dimensional and expensive for my liking as a whole school educational license at the moment.
