A SCAMPER thinking tool is similar to a BAR (Bigger, Add Replace). It can be used to think differently or make changes to a topic, issue object etc. It encourages students to:

  • Substitute a part for something else
  • Combine two parts together
  • Adapt a section of it to look different
  • Modify a section to make it bigger or smaller
  • Put something new on it
  • Eliminate something from it
  • Reverse the location the location of something on it

The Brainstorm thinking tool

A brainstorm is great tool to use to allow students to draw or write down their thinking about a topic. You need to write down the topic in the middle of the page. They then draw lines coming out of the middle. Connecting each line is key words about the topic. You can then have more branches coming off from these ideas. A tool for planning writing, reflecting on an excursion, or use sharing knowledge about a mathematical concept.  You can draw and write your ideas.

321 Reflection Thinking Tool

This procedure is used to reflect deeply on an activity/ idea. The students can write 3 things you have learnt, 2 insights you have had and 1 question you still have. Or you can change the 3, 2 and 1 to suit your needs and push students to think deeply about their reflections.
