Lesson Idea: Go Fly a Kite - Includes Kite Template

Kids love making kites.  And the kite I have included in this lesson is incredibly easy to make, requires very few resources and flies brilliantly.  Secondly this is a great opportunity for you to learn about writing procedural texts.

Requirements:

The lesson is simple:  Inform your students that they are going to make a kite, decorate it, and fly it, but the learning intention for them to be aware of is the procedures that are required to complete the task, as they will be writing a procedural text on it.

The instructions to make the kite are all included on the template and it would require around 20 - 40 minutes to make your kites, plus some decorating time.

Take your kids out to fly them if weather and time permits.

The next phase of the lesson is to model writing a procedural text about the process of making and lying your kite.  There is a great resource on teaching procedural texts here.

Put all of these things together and you have just mixed, some art, science and literacy together with great fun.

I hope you enjoy it.

How To Download Any YouTube Song Or Video With Dirpy

I Found this on the excellent GroovyPost.com

Do you have a favorite YouTube song or video that you’d like to download?  Certainly you wouldn’t be alone if you do, and Dirpy might be able to solve that problem for you.  Dirpy is a free online service that will provide a downloadable link for nearly any YouTube video.  If bit-torrents are blocked at your location or just plain sound risky, Dirpy might be a great way to find the music you are looking for.  The beauty about  simplicity is its ease of use being that Dirpy is a web application and requires nothing be installed and works on most internet browsers.

Step 1

Find the YouTube video (or song within the video) that you want to download and then Copy the URL in the address bar.

Note that some videos such as those hosted with Vevo may not be available for download.

Your students will love getting creative with Pivot Stick Animator in the classroom

Pivot stick animator has been around for quite a while now and my kids have been using it for a number of years.  At first it looks like a really boring animation application that involves stick figures as the key graphical element.

If you dig a little deeper however you will find that Pivot is one of them most open ended and fun learning opportunities freely available to students.  We have made movies of stories and used it explain concepts behind force and motion as well as a maths tool when creating timed animations.

Pivot Stickfigure Animator is a unique software, that allows you to create stick figure animations easily and without any artistic skills. You can move the sections of the sick figure and easily create a chain of animation frames that can be previewed as you go. You can use more than one stick-figure in the animation, and even create your own stick figures using an easy to use visual editor that lets you assemble objects out of lines and circles. In addition, you can optionally set animation size, speed and more. The result can be saved as animated GIF file. Fun and easy to use, surprisingly well featured.

Essentially the Pivot works like an on-screen flip book. A single image is first of all created by placing the stick figure character in a starting position and then pressing the next frame button. From here simple motion can be created by pressing and holding the mouse over a "pivot Point" and dragging that element to a new position, before pressing the next frame.  Simply repeat the process until the desired result is achieved.

You can download Pivot Animator freely here.
