Lesson Idea: Go Fly a Kite - Includes Kite Template
Kids love making kites. And the kite I have included in this lesson is incredibly easy to make, requires very few resources and flies brilliantly. Secondly this is a great opportunity for you to learn about writing procedural texts.
Requirements:
- Kite Template - Download here
- Skewers or Straws
- String
- Streamers
The lesson is simple: Inform your students that they are going to make a kite, decorate it, and fly it, but the learning intention for them to be aware of is the procedures that are required to complete the task, as they will be writing a procedural text on it.
The instructions to make the kite are all included on the template and it would require around 20 - 40 minutes to make your kites, plus some decorating time.
Take your kids out to fly them if weather and time permits.
The next phase of the lesson is to model writing a procedural text about the process of making and lying your kite. There is a great resource on teaching procedural texts here.
Put all of these things together and you have just mixed, some art, science and literacy together with great fun.
I hope you enjoy it.
